Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR)

SBR is a fill-and-draw type of reactor system involving a single complete-mix reactor in which all steps of the activated sludge process occur. A unique feature of the SBR system is that there is no need for a return activated sludge (RAS) system, because both aeration and settling occur in the same tank.
Advantages of SBR
  • Process is simplified; final clarifiers and RAS pumping are not required
  • Modular construction possible
  • Operation is flexible; nutrient removal can be accomplished by operational changes
